Serenity Spanish Restaurant & Bar

In decadent desserts, places to chill, randoms on July 11, 2009 at 7:18 pm

serenity, spanish, restaurant, bar, live music, latin, jazz, tapas, harborfront, vivo, vivo city, meditteraneanForging ahead with a new identity after celebrating their 1st year anniversary, Serenity Restaurant & Bistro, previously known for their Mediterranean cuisine is now branded as Serenity Spanish Restaurant & Bar. Serenity’s owner and director, Rona, chose a Spanish identity for her restaurant because of its holistic appeal. Spanish culture encompasses a vibrant experience which marries dining, music, and festive dancing—one that suits their waterfront location at Vivo City perfectly. The restaurant boasts a seating capacity of 210 (including alfresco seating), open-concept dining, and provides a variety of latin, acoustic, and jazz music live every night from 7.30 pm. Everything down to Serenity’s staff uniforms (influenced by Ibiza’s laidback party lifestyle) reflect their new image. Most importantly, their Spanish menu offers an extensive array of Spanish cuisines from different regions, with chief offerings from Spain’s third largest city, Valencia.

serenity, spanish, restaurant, bar, live music, tapas, harborfront, vivo city, vivoBefore Serenity’s Spanish menu was launched in February this year, Valencian Chef Andrea was specially invited in December 2008 to provide rigorous training for Serenity’s culinary team, as well as tasting sessions to ensure the authencity of all dishes.

Thereafter, Serenity’s Executive Chef, Alvin Tan, introduced his interpretations of selected dishes – tweaking them to suit local tastebuds without compromising their authenticity. A large number of ingredients are also sourced from Spanish food suppliers, such as their chorizo and especially bomba rice which is a staple for their signature Paella Valenciana, other paella dishes, and Arroz con Leche dessert because of its good absorbency (3x its volume). Taking things a step further, Serenity is on the look out for more wines (and possibly beer) from various Spanish suppliers to add to their collection of Spanish liquors (such as 14 flavours of schnapps), after-meal drink Patcharan Olave and even Spanish coffee which contains kahlua. Brandy aficionados will be thrilled to see the 100-year-old Brandy Casajuana ($32, $118, $700), of which only slightly over 1000 bottles are produced and in Singapore it’s sold exclusively at Serenity.

serenity, sangria, valencia, spanish, cocktail, barK and I started our lunch with a zesty Sangria ($15) [***.] done Valencian-style with orange peel and lemon slices, and Mama Mia ($8) [****] - a refreshingly light mocktail made of lychee fruit, mango juice and grenadine. Both drinks went very well with our recommended tapas because they were fruit-based and not too heavy on the brandy or gin for the Sangria. mocktail, driniks, drinks, bar, serenity, spanish, restaurant, lychee, mango, grenadineWhile Mama Mia is Serenity’s own concoction, the Sangria and another called Spanish Bullfrog ($15) are authentically Spanish.

cold tapas, spanish, tuna, capsicum, prawn, piquillo, piquillo pepperOur first two tapas – Croqueta de Pollo ($9) [***] and Spanish Tuna Piquillo ($10) [***] were hot and cold respectively. The former is a spanish chicken croquet, while the latter consists of roasted and chilled piquillo peppers stuffed with tuna and prawn. For those who are worried that the peppers may be too hot to handle, fret not because they’ve been de-seeded and peeled beforehand. Another tapas, Empanadillas or Spanish Tuna Puff ($11) [***] is available on the late-night menu together with the two above. It is a Spanish take on our local curry puff, only this one is baked and filled with tuna, egg, a little red wine, and possibly a hint of potato.

olive oil, gambas al ajillo, gambas, shrimp, prawn, garlic, tapas, spanishThe last 3 tapas are my personal favourites of the lot – the Gambas al Ajillo ($12) [****.], Pan con Alioli ($6) [****] , and Jamón Ibérico ($18 – 25 grams) [****]. Simply seasoned with garlic, olive oil, dried red chilli and parsley, the prawns were succulent and tasty. Pan con Alioli is actually freshly-baked herb bread with sundried tomatoes served with Serenity’s home-made alioli dip (garlic, salt, olive oil, milk) which melts smoothly on the palate. jamon, black pig, iberian, ham, spanish,Jamón ibérico, cured, salt, serenityLast but certainly not least of the three, is jamón ibérico or Iberian ham, which is fast-becoming an attraction on Spanish restaurant menus. This special cerdo negro (black pig) is salted for days and cured for 24 months in a secluded mountain cave used exclusively for that purpose. Therefore, the price of this thinly-sliced cured ham whose salty flavour lingers on your tastebuds…is self-explanatory. Our friendly and attentive waitress, Ellen, is pictured carving those coveted slices here.

paella, valencia, spanish, paella valenciana, bomba rice, seafood, chickenNext up, our main course was Serenity’s signature Paella Valenciana ($40 – 2 pax / $80 – 4 pax) [****.], which has notably won the Singapore Top 100 Signature Dish Award 2009. Every serving of this colourful assortment takes 30-40 min to prepare, so it’s advisable to order this first even if you’re undecided on the rest of your meal. Serenity’s version is traditionally Valencian, prepared with bomba rice, prawns, half shell mussels, squid, chorizo, chicken, and saffron. Don’t be alarmed by the amount of peas you see here if you’re not a fan of them, I assure you that they taste nothing like frozen/half-frozen peas. Due to the long preparation time, every grain of bomba rice soaks up the individual flavours of the ingredients cooked with it, and is bursting with savoury goodness.

sea bass, sea salt, baked, bay leaf, spanishsea bass, sea salt, baked, bay leaf, spanishAccompanying our paella, we had the Lubina a la Sal [****] from Serenity’s Chef’s menu. For this weekend only (10-12 July), it is offered as part of a special 1-for-1 promotion for dine in only. Like the Paella Valenciana, this baked whole-seabass requires 30 min preparation time. The fish is hidden beneath a pile of fine sea salt and fresh bay leaves and served with a potato and salad on the side. I’ll let the photos show you how it is served at your table…all you have to do is pick up your fork. While the Spanish prefer to eat the crisp baked skin, I think it’s a tad too salty for our tastebuds. However, the flesh was soft and smooth and very light in taste. A very healthy choice for a main course I must say.

vanilla, ice cream, bomba rice, cinnamon, milk, cream, custard, spanishNow moving on to our (for some of us) highly-anticipated desserts…we tried the Peras al Vino Tinto ($9) [****.] and Arroz con Leche ($9) [****]. Tasting the Arroz con Leche was an interesting experience for me. It was one that reminded me very much of Thai mango sticky rice, or traditional Chinese glutinous rice desserts, only this was a traditional Spanish favourite. It consists of bomba rice cooked in milk, cream, and cinnamon (maybe a hint of custard too), served with vanilla ice-cream and garnished with mint leaf. All in all, it was a hearty, wholesome dessert that was surprisingly light.

poached pear, red wine, vanilla, ice cream, strawberries, spanishPeras al Vino Tinto is apparently a popular choice among Serenity’s patrons because of its fruity and thus healthy properties. Poached pear drenched in red wine with vanilla ice-cream on the side is a decadent match in dessert heaven.

Serenity has my thumbs up.

Caramel Cafe

In decadent desserts, places to chill, randoms on June 25, 2009 at 3:29 am

caramel cafe, hairloom and caramel, beach roadMy latest whimsical obsession, Caramel Cafe, has certainly been well-publicised in various magazines and tv shows. But nevertheless, they are a worthy mention that I’d like to share with anyone who hasn’t heard of them yet. Started in January 2009, Caramel Cafe is a labour of love that is not only a cafe, but also a hair salon and retail venture. Hairloom (nice pun there) is located in the same premises, and they’ve recently started their retail arm, Oject d’Art, which means ‘work of art’. Expect nothing less than cosy yet quirky interiors for an afternoon tête-à-tête over tea and desserts. I really like the bright airy feel you get indoors because of their glass doors let the light stream in and all. They close at 8pm on weeknights and 10pm on weekends (closed Sun) so don’t get there too late!

caramel cafe, hairloom and caramel, beach road, shaw leisure galleryMy girlfriend A and I were mesmerised by their counter (pictured here) for a good 5 minutes or so. It looked so inviting and the dessert display had rows of cupcakes amongst others. Loved the decor which is rather reminiscent of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland don’t you think? The owners did a great job in transforming simple pieces of furniture into eclectic pieces by reupholstering them. But this place isn’t just for show…the good people at Caramel Cafe are very friendly and very very attentive. They also seem to bake a lot at regular intervals. Which can only mean that they freshly bake their fabulous desserts daily. I also like how their ovens are located just behind the high counter so that one can catch whiffs of what’s in the oven. Believe me that’s one great sales strategy!

caramel cafe, hairloom and caramel, shaw leisure gallery, beach roadAfter careful deliberation, A and I decided to have their Lemon Creme and Carrot Cream Cheese cupcakes ($3.50 each), Warm Chocolate Banana Cake ($6.90) and a pot of chamomile tea for two ($2.90). Each resting in delicate casings, our cupcakes looked simple and were served on a gorgeous plate. Well that would be an understatement. From furniture to cutlery, plates to tea pots, everything was meticulously handpicked. A and I were so intrigued by our tea cups that we turned them upside down to get a hint of their origins (answer: Japan & China). Oh yes do ask them for honey to add to your tea because their honey’s great…

caramel cafe, hairloom and caramel, shaw leisure gallery, choclate banana cake, decadent desserts, teaOf the 2 cupcakes, I preferred the Carrot Cream Cheese [****] one. I was very surprised that it contained miniscule carrot bits in its centre, and the cream cheese was a great pairing. Personally, I would’ve liked it to be a little more moist. The Lemon Creme [***] one, however, could’ve had more lemony zest. The lemon creme was light and just the right amout of sweet, but it would’ve been to add more zest to it.

caramel cafe, hairloom and caramel, carrot cake, cupcake, lemon cupcake, decadent dessertsNot forgetting our chocolate staple, I found their Warm Chocolate Banana Cake [****] served with vanilla ice-cream on the side really, really good. Though it wasn’t oozing thick, hot chocolate the way some outrageously sinful chocolate cakes do, this one was sufficiently moist and not overly sweet. Warm chocolate still oozed from its centre, but blended with mushy banana slices…it was a wonderful match. And it’s topped with cocoa powder. How can we contend with that? What I loved about this cake was the fact that I didn’t feel too guilty afterwards…

Can’t wait to return for more delectable treats from Caramel. This time I’d like to try their lunch menu too!

Entre-Nous Creperie

In decadent desserts on February 12, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Photobucket

Entre-Nous Creperie is a contemporary little place that serves up authentic French crepes over at Seah Street. Some of you will remember Crêperie des Arts, at the corner of Prinsep Place, and I kept this place in mind when I tried Entre-Nous’ crepes.

My friend B and I popped by around 4pm that day. Just in time for their Sweet Break, where you can order a crepe for $12 (selected varieties) and a hot drink. If you’d like to have their gourmand range of crepes, it’s $3 more. They do have an extensive range of galettes and crepes for you to choose from so take your time to browse the menu.

As for those who’d like to kick off a night of drinks early, or grab a beer after work…Entre-Nous’ Happy Hour will both feed you and quench your thirst. Grab a $10 French beer or a glass of French apple cider ($8/glass, $30/bottle) and get a complimentary crepe with it.Photobucket

PhotobucketPersonally, I veer towards the most basic item on the menu for the basis of comparison. Therefore, our choices for the day was a Salted Butter Caramel Crepe ($8.90) and Emmenthal Cheese Galette ($11.90). The salted butter caramel crepe was a soft crepe (much like a thin pancake) drizzled with thick caramel as picture here. Simple in taste, and rather good [***.]

The emmenthal cheese galette, on the other hand, had an interesting combination of taste sensations. Crisp in texture, with a thin carrot topping and oozing cheese from its centre, this galette wasn’t what I expected. I deduced that it tasted different because of the organic buckwheat used for their galettes. The overall taste was mildly bitter at times, and a little salty at others. Really good stuff [****].

Others on the menu: quiches, omelettes, more galettes and crepes, escargot, assorted blinis and lots more…

Obolo Dessert Tasting

In decadent desserts on November 28, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Last Friday, I attended a dessert tasting at Obolo organised by LIC, and had the privilege of getting to know fellow food bloggers like foodiesqueen and nevertrustascrawnyfoodie. Obolo is a cosy spot for a cuppa and some desserts if you’re looking to have tea or a little something after dinner. Tucked away in Joo Chiat amidst rows of popular food haunts, it’s easy to overlook them if you’re not alert. Just look out for a red signage diagonally opposite Joo Chiat CC (near Katong Mall). Run by pastry chefs Mac Woo and June Lee of the popular Crave dessert books (sold island-wide in major book stores), Obolo is definitely worth visiting.

Our dessert degustation menu ($23+) was an opulent assortment of petite cheesecakes, tartlets, macarons and a dessert shooter. All in all a very, very, filling tasting session. The following are some comments on Obolo’s desserts (just an opinion), and interestingly all the food bloggers had varying opinions…so do take mine with a pinch of salt!

obolo tasting platter

From Top to Bottom (left to right): Pinada Cheesecake, Tiramisu Au Chocolat, Nikita, Chocolat Noir, New York Cheesecake, Chocolat-Passion, Caraibe, Le Cassis, Mango-Passion Cheesecake

Pinada Cheesecake [****]: paired with rum-soaked raisins, this one was a refreshing combination of zesty pineapple and light cheese.

Tiramisu Au Chocolat [***]: a tad disappointing because of the mascarpone creme (tasted a little too light for my liking).

Nikita [***.]: A dark chocolate ganache mousse with cherry-raspberry gelee, pistachio ivoire mousse & chocolate-almond biscuit with kirsch..this dessert’s unconventional ingredients will appeal to a select palate. Personally, pistachio isn’t a huge favourite…but it was still a delectable treat.

Chocolate Noir [***]: A plain tartlet filled with dark chocolate ganache topped with a raspberry. Nothing special compared to the others, but goes well with tea.

New York Cheesecake [***]: Surprisingly, I found the cheesecake too dry. There was a hint of lemon to perk up the tastebuds…perhaps there should’ve been more cheese…

Chocolat-Passion [***]: The other tartlet pictured above, this one consisted of a milk chocolate & passion fruit ganache. Those who are a tad averse to sour fruits will find this sour, so proceed with caution…

Caraibe [****]: 67% caramel-chocolate mousse with a (very good) dark chocolate ganache on top of a pecan chocolate fudge cake base. A rather rich, but decadent delight for chocolate lovers.

Le Cassis [****.]: My pick of the bunch! Loved the dark chocolate ganache mousse with blackcurrant ivoire mousse, chocolate-almond biscuit and crunchy praline feulletine. A must-try.

Mango-Passion Cheesecake [****]: The mango was light, passion fruit wasn’t overpowering, and the cheese just went really well with everything.

obolo berry shooterOn your left, we’ve got Summer Berries [***] - a tangy mascarpone mousse with red berry gelee, kirsch-mixed berry campote, kirsch-soaked vanilla genoise and garnished with fresh berries. Speaking from the perspective of someone who loves berries, this dessert will make a pleasant after-dinner treat because of its overall lightness in taste. But like before, I do think the mascarpone could afford to be a little thicker. Nonetheless, it’s still worth a try.

Last but not least, we ended off with Macha (green tea) & Hazelnut-Chocolate Macarons. These macarons were better than Canele’s and gave Choupinette a run-for-their-money in my opinion. Very sweet fillings with a nice crunchy shell, these macarons were pretty delish.

I’ll be planning some dessert tastings myself for 2009, so keep your eyes peeled for details. Thanks LIC for holding a great event!

An Exclusive Dessert Experience | Rogues

In decadent desserts, places to chill on October 13, 2008 at 11:45 pm

PhotobucketEarlier tonight, I attended a long overdue dessert tasting conducted by my talented friend and pastry chef, Gerard Lewis. The event was held at Rogues Bar & Bistro at Market Street in Raffles Place. Rogues may be dwarfed by its neighbours (it’s a small stand-alone structure) but they do have attractive interiors.

The night’s menu was a secret right up till the moment we took our seats. Gerard’s way of building suspense no doubt. Our menu for the night was printed on a long matte gold card – 5 courses – Apple, Moscato, Cheese, Hennessy, Chocolate. Even with the menu in front of me, my taste buds tingled in anticipation.

The first course (Apple) was a warm Granny Smith Apple Crumble & Sweet Pandan Cappucino [****] A delightful combination of apples, raisins and nuts, the familiar taste of apple crumble warmed the palate. Its awesome pairing with the pandan (a tropical plant with a sweet juice, usually green in colour, commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine) cappucino was nice and foamy, very light. It’s always good to start off light with desserts…

Granny Smith Apple Crumble & Pandan CappucinoThe dessert pictures you see here are arranged according to its appearance. Next, we had the Orange Muscato & Flora d’asti Jelly with sabayon gelato and lychee espuma foam [***]. While I’m not certain what espuma foam is exacly, I do know that the sabayon (a foamy custard made of egg yolks, wine – usually marsala & sugar) gelato was very……good. However, I did think the orange muscato could’ve been stronger since it’s the highlight of the dessert.

My personal favourite of the night was dessert no.3 – Smoked Philadelphia Cheese with strawberry coulis, mixed currant air and merlot au glaze [****.]. Decorated with flowers and berries, not only was this one pretty to look at, it was an experimentation with molecular gastronomy…one that recurred with another dessert. The currant air was interesting and complemented the cheese very well. What really stood out in this dessert was the merlot glaze I felt…it was a great touch to everything.

PhotobucketAnother close contender was the Flourless Chocolate Cake with chocolate mousse, salted peanut & hazelnut crunch [****]. This one stood out from the rest because of a tiny addition: Spanish pops. That was all our chef would reveal, but those things sure crackled in our mouths with every bite of the dessert. The mint was a good choice of garnish too, for it took the edge off the richness of the chocolate. As for the flourless chocolate cake itself, it was splendid.

Last but not least, Hot Velvet Manjari Chocolate [***.] was sinfully rich and oozed chocolate goodness. Good thing the heaviest was saved for the last. It was utterly decadent because of its richness, but believe me you’ll finish it anyway. Gerard has many tricks in his bag, and I’m certainly looking forward to what he’ll conjure next. FYI, he does cakes and desserts on the side so drop me an email if you’re interested in ordering for corporate functions to birthdays and such. Savour the visual feast below….

Solace for a persistent cold

In decadent desserts, luxurious food therapy, randoms on August 30, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Unlike most people who would opt for a warm cuppa or a comforting stew…I go for a rather toxic combination of things to ease my cold. Remember Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie at Paragon? Here’s what I ordered from them that fateful day when I was stranded in Orchard Road with a persistent cold:

Photobucket

Earl Grey Ice-cream with Milk Chocolate Shards & Raspberries ($8.50) [*****] - A perfect infusion of earl grey tea and vanilla ice-cream, leaving a lingering finish of earl grey on the palate. The ice-cream had good ‘longevity’ in my opinion - it took its time to melt – allowing you to savour this delightful dessert. There’s a nice balance of flavours here with a mildly sour tinge of raspberries, sweet milk chocolate, and sufficient earl grey to satisfy tea-lovers.  A definite must-try for ice-cream fans.

Photobucket

A warm, hearty concoction from Canele, this Rustic Bacon & Pea Soup ($8.50) [****.] has pieces of bacon, baby corn, chicken, peas and mushrooms. The essence of each ingredient can be tasted with a mere spoonful of soup. It’s light, definitely no MSG and such, and made with fresh ingredients that makes it a tasty start to a meal. The soup is served with Canele’s bread on the side, so dip away…

Now this is what I’d call a cure to a cold.

Food Addict Cafe | now defunct

Food Addict Cafe

Food Addict Cafe

Food Addict Cafe first joined the Toa Payoh Central neighbourhood in 2007. They are situated along a row of shophouses facing the library, next to a florist. I’ve tried their desserts some time back, but yesterday was the first time I tried their food. B and I were there for his belated birthday lunch, so we decided to get their cake set (+$6) in addition to our main courses. For an additional $6, you’ll get any slice of cake on the menu or that’s on display, plus a drink.

When we were going through the appetisers, Little Miss Toadstool ($5) stood out, but it was a pity that they sold out. Since it’s highly recommended by B, I’ll try it another day. B decided on one of Food Addict’s popular mains – Hot Chix ($9) [***.], a blueberry soda, and Dark Chocolate Cake [***] for his lunch. After much deliberation (I was torn between fish, spaghetti pesto and prawn aglio olio), I settled for the Prawn Aglio Olio ($8.50) [***]- mainly because B wanted my opinion on how good it was. For my choice of cake and drink, I had a strawberry soda and Mango Mousse Cake [***.]. I must say it’s tough picking a cake when you’re faced with a revolving display like the one you’re looking at now.

Food Addict Cafe's Oven-baked Chicken

Hot Chix

After a relatively short wait, Hot Chix arrived first. The piping hot oven-baked chicken breast smelled really good. The flesh was tender and juicy with minimal oil. After a few morsels of B’s chicken, I established somewhat that the marinade had a light teriyaki tinge to it. Hot Chix makes a hearty, healthy meal I’d say.

I must also commend Food Addict for their wonderful service. The waiters were very attentive, topping up our glasses of water frequently, and were pretty helpful in their dessert recommendations. It’s a small place so their staff recognise regulars like B.

Prawn Aglio Olio

My Prawn Aglio Olio came shortly after, so the wait wasn’t long at all. Presentation-wise, I felt that the pasta could’ve been tossed better. But I’ve learnt from experience not to judge a dish by its looks, so I picked up my fork, twirled it, and took my first bite.

The first thing I tasted was the tabasco sauce, followed by the olive oil. Food Addict’s version has onions, garlic, chillis, mushrooms, and prawns. Do ask them to adjust the spiciness of the dish, because aglio olio typically has chilli flakes or cut chilli added to it. I asked for mine to be slightly spicier, so there were chilli seeds aplenty. The aglio olio would’ve tasted better with a little more garlic, but the overall taste was flavourful. I’m difficult to please when it comes to this particular pasta simply because it’s my favourite. They did nail the al dente portion though, so kudos for that.

Food Addict Cafe's Mango Mousse Cake

Mango Mousse Cake

Food Addict’s desserts are value-for-money and utterly scrumptious. I love their mudpies that come oozing with sinful chocolate sauce, vanilla ice-cream and chocolate chips. The Mango Mousse Cake is very light, with a great sponge cake base, mango filling and mango jelly layer. Perfect after a filling meal. Their Dark Chocolate Cake is worth a try too.

Marvelous Cream

In decadent desserts, popular reads, randoms on July 8, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Photobucket

Marvelous Cream hails from Japan, and Singapore is one of the brand’s newest franchisees. They opened their doors on 3 July at CityLink Mall, offering 20% off their sweets. I stumbled upon this place through sheer luck on the way to dinner with B & Y at Franky’s Kaffe Kitchen. Just imagine how fast we finished dinner that night, and how much compartmentalisation was going on in our tummies. After all, the cardinal rule for those with the sweet tooth is: always leave room for dessert.

By the time we got there, the queue was starting to snake around a little as the opening was attracting more and more attention. Marvelous Cream’s french parfait selection looked incredibly enticing. It took all my willpower not to over-order. Before I proceed, parfait [pahr-FAY] is served differently in different countries:

1. In the US, this dessert consists of ice cream layered with flavored syrup or fruit and whipped cream. It’s often topped with whipped cream, nuts and sometimes a maraschino cherry.

2. A French parfait is a frozen custard dessert made with egg yolks, sugar, whipped cream and a flavoring such as fruit puree. In French, parfait means “perfect,” which is how many view this dessert.

Photobucket

You’ll be glad to know that Marvelous Cream serves both types of parfait. They’ve got 9 ice-cream flavours to choose from – White Milk Cream, European Cream Cheese, Belgium Chocolate, Fruity Mango, Hazelnuts Praline, Golden Vanilla, Natural Yoghurt, Strawberry Cream, and Marsala Espresso (less than 0.1% alc.). B decided to have the Rum Raisin Custard Pie [***] consisting of Golden Vanilla, Rum Raisin, Millefeuille and fresh cream, while Y had her tummy set on Noisette Chocolat Classic [***.] (Hazelnut Praline, brownie, fresh cream, Koo Belcher Choc).

Eagerly waiting in line, I changed my mind several times before I decided on Mix Berry Cream Cheesecake [***](European Cream Cheese, Strawberry, Blueberry, Raspberry).

After ordering, you’ll get to watch them mix your ice-cream on a -16°C marble top ala Cold Rock or Ice Cream Chefs.

I must say that of the 3 we shared, the Noisette Chocolat Classic was the best. While the brownie topping wasn’t fantastic, the combination of it and the other toppings made it a nice mix. It wasn’t too heavy, and the ice-cream was good. The Mix Berry one I had was pretty good too, but my main qualm with it is the frozen fruits. I prefer Cold Rock’s fresh berry toppings instead…frozen doesn’t work for me unless it’s in Yammi Yoghurt.

Photobucket

On your left we have their French parfait selection…I’ll definitely try these the next time I pop by on an emptier stomach. You can make your own selection of toppings and ice-creams, or go with 1 of their 28 selections for the American parfait. Choose from:

Junior (80ml) – $4.90

Regular (100ml) – $6.20

Large (180ml) – $8.80

Paper cup, waffle bowl/cone (+$1), chocolate waffle bowl/cone (+$1.50)

Shops in Japan: Tokyo | Yokohama | Osaka | Kobe | Nagoya | Hiroshima | Gifu | Ibaraki | Okinawa

exotic patissier marvelous cream

/ Update: I’ve tried one of their french parfaits, Exotic Patissier ($5.90) [****] and I found it really delish. Topped with raspberry bits, this parfait has a layer of chiffon cake, frozen mango custard, and berry fillings. I absolutely loved it.

U.d.d.e.r.s Ice-cream

U.d.d.e.r.s’ liquer ice-creams are fantastic! Check them out at the Takashimaya Food Fest now till 13 July (Sun), or chill-out at their outlet in Goldhill Shopping Centre beside United Square (opp. Starbucks). Isn’t their name real cute? It was named to reflect the freshness of their ice-cream. Their logo’s great for brand recall too in my opinion. I’m sure they’ll be a hit with students and children. But this smart brand also targets older customers with their substantial liquer ice-cream range. I tried their Cherry Bomb [****] and Rum Rum & Raisin [****] flavours, and it was love at first lick. These liquer bottles you see aren’t for mere display…they certainly use sizeable amounts of them in their ice-creams. Alcohol lovers will be glad to know that the aftertaste of alcohol from the ice-creams will linger on your tastebuds, leaving a smooth and light finish to your dessert. I must also highlight that their “scoopers” or ice-cream crew give excellent service. They know their product inside out and give great recommendations for the ice-creams.

Since my first visit to U.d.d.e.r.s was at the Takashimaya Food Fest, and I’ve not gotten the chance to see their outlet…I’ll definitely pop by soon. Especially since their ice-cream is available till 12 midnight! I love the thought of sweet treats at queer hours…knowing how my food cravings can be rather random. So do pop by to visit them if you’re in the vicinity or craving some late-night ice-cream…

Games like Taboo, Taboo Singapore, Cluedo, Battleship and more are readily available too. To top it all off, they’ve got free WiFi! What more can one ask for?

The Sweet Stone Parad’Ice

In decadent desserts on June 18, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Just when I was getting a tad bored with the variety of waffles we’ve got in places like Gelare and neighbourhood bakeries, I realised that I’ve not gotten round to trying The Sweet Stone Parad’Ice’s Liège Waffles [*****]. That changed last night when I decided to have dinner at Old Airport Road Food Centre before the Osmonds’ concert. Snaking our way through tables of hungry folks, my mum, sis and I ended up beside my favourite chee cheong fun stall – Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun at #01-155. Little did I know that Sweet Stone Parad’Ice over at Golden Mile Food Centre had opened a new branch at 1 of my favourite hawker centres! They’ve got different sets to choose from: Set A consists of 1 Liège waffle & a Belgian chocolate dip ($2.50), Set B comes with 2 Liège waffles & a Belgian chocolate dip. I had Set B after a really heavy dinner of orh luak (oyster omelette), kueh pie tee, chee cheong fun, otah and BBQ-ed chicken wings.

The simple combination of thick-crusted waffles served fresh and piping hot with decadent Belgian chocolate in a bowl is simply divine. Expecting my waffle to taste more than a little buttery, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t taste dry or buttery. Even after leaving it to cool for more than 15 minutes, the waffle still tasted great. The Belgian chocolate dip not only oozed wholesome cacao goodness, the best part was it wasn’t watered down to a thin blend the way some dessert places do. I’ll definitely make another trip down on an emptier stomach to sample other things on the menu. In addition to their signature waffles, they also serve their very own gelato at $1.80/scoop, and regular chocolate fondue (with that yummy Belgian dip) from $7.80 onwards. Those of you in groups might want to share the Royal Claypot Fondue (for 2-3 people) priced at $14.80..it should look like this photo on the right.

With more ‘Western’ stalls such as Modern Italian Food (Old Airport Rd Food Centre, #01-35) and Mien (Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre, #02-133) joining the ranks of local food haunts, our hawker food experience looks set to scale new gastronomical heights.

Choupinette

In decadent desserts, popular reads, the big date on May 20, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Fall in love with the chic Parisian garden cafe, Choupinette, on the corner of Coronation Walk next to Coronation Plaza. Owner Agnes Verrier hails from Provence, France, and she is the woman behind the warm decor you see on your left. She also ensures that your Eggs Benedict’s taste the same over time, for she believes in maintaining high standards for everything Choupinette serves. Their pastries and desserts are all freshly-baked daily, and served on eclectic plates that you’ll want to take home. For those who have heard of Choupinette, they’re known for their flavoured macaroons [****] (a small cookie classically made of almond paste or ground almonds mixed with sugar and egg whites), sold individually at $1.80 per piece. Do try their raspberry macaroon which has a crisp outer shell and a chewy raspberry centre that’ll leaving you wanting more. Some other flavours include passionfruit, strawberry, chocolate, and peach. You’ve been warned: these little poppers are pretty addictive.

Another dessert that I liked was their Tarte aux Fraises [****.] also known as Strawberry Tart ($6.50), which had sweet strawberries paired with a crumbly crust and almond flakes. Between this and Canele’s Strawberry Tart, it was a tough fight…but they’ve both secured a place in my tummy and heart. I’d also recommend Elle & Lui ($6.90) [****], another raspberry treat that’s light and tangy without being sour. For creme brulee fans, you must try Double Plaisir ($6.90) [***.] - a combination of rich dark chocolate topped with a layer of creme brulee. If you’re into cheesecakes, go ahead and take a bite of their White Chocolate Cheescake ($6.90) [****.] which is gloriously light on the cheese, and substitutes the typical cheesecake crumb base with crumbs on the side of the cake instead.

Last but not least, giant Eclairs! [****] They’ve got them in coffee, chocolate, and vanilla….really really great ones too. Although they’re a tad expensive at $5 each, I’d say it’s worth every bite…they’re not mini eclairs after all. For more pictures on Choupinette’s desserts, check out Charlinary.com’s Facebook group page.

Mother’s Day Ideas

In charlinary specials, decadent desserts, popular reads on April 30, 2008 at 9:02 pm

If there is one thing we should all know about our mothers, it’ll be their penchant for sweet things – be it nonya kueh, ice kachang, cheng tng, chendol, “tim ban” (cantonese desserts), chocolates or pastries. Most would vehemently deny any associations with this liking for fear of expanding waist lines, or cite diabetes and high cholesterol as a reason to avoid these sweet treats like the plague…but deep down inside, they crave it. Believe me, they do.

The minute you tell them things like, “Mum, you really should indulge yourself once in a while…it won’t hurt. Besides, I bought this for you…”, whatever will power or resolve they have will melt into a puddle. So to help everyone out, I’ve come up with some gift ideas for Mother’s Day (11 May) - an occasion you should remember to observe religiously, failing which you’ll incur the wrath of your mother who will no doubt tell your aunts/grandmothers/family friends etc. what a unfilial child you’ve been.

For starters, if your mum is traditional and likes nonya kueh or tau huay (beancurd)…you should head down to Glory Catering at East Coast Road (they’re halal) and

Rochor Original Beancurd
(7 Short St), which is diagonally across the road from Peace Centre along Selegie Road. If your mum (like mine) is crazy about egg tarts or onde onde (glutinous rice flour with grated coconut & gula melaka), I’d suggest Tong Heng egg tarts from the outlet next to Maxwell Road Food Centre/Jurong Point, and the famous onde onde stall at Maxwell Road Food Centre. If you intend to get the onde onde do try to get there around 9.30am before the queues start to form, and note that they’re closed on Sundays. Rainbow Hot & Cold Desserts (Blk 11 Telok Blangah Cresent Market & Food Centre) is reputed for their ice kachang and such, so do check them out if you’re in the vicinity.

Since it’s the one day of the year (other than birthdays) that most people splurge on their mums, do be a little extravagant if you can. Indulge her chocolate cravings with Prestat fine chocolates (located at Raffles City) - if their chocolates are fit for the Queen, they’ll definitely make your mother feel like one. I’d recommend their Rose & Violet Cremes, Heart Box, or Marc de Champagne Chocolate Truffles.
Other high-end gourmet chocolate brands you might want to consider include Hediard over at Tudor Court (next to Tanglin Mall), or Teuscher at Palais Renaissance. There you have it: High-end ($$ to $$$$) English, French & Swiss chocolates that are guaranteed to make your mum feel all happy inside. On a special occasion like this, commercial brands like Cadbury will not do.

I’ve saved the best for last: Pastries! The following is a list of places to get awesome cakes/cupcakes/brownies/muffins/tarts etc. – the following is in alphabetical order, so mouseover or click on their names to access their websites (this applies to all places mentioned prior to this too).

Crêperie des Arts

In decadent desserts, the big date on January 15, 2008 at 12:31 am

Crêperie des Arts was started in November 2007 by French Chef Johan Aubertin, who hails from Brittany, on the west coast of France. Coincidentally, Brittany is the very place where the world smelled the very first wafts of lovely French crêpes. The sounds of French music pulsates throughout this quaint little restaurant the moment you step inside. Their waitresses are very friendly and attentive, so do ask them for their recommendations.
You will find sweet and savoury galettes (the name given in most French crêperies to savoury buckwheat crêpes), as well as simply delightful desserts on their menu. My boyfriend and I started our dinner with a cup of traditional French apple cider (Valderance Cider – Doux, 2% alc.) in hand. However, the very first sip prompted us to order a bottle instead. The cider is also available in Brut (5% alc.), priced at $7/cup, and $24/bottle (75 cl). If you are looking for a salad that is different, go ahead and try Seguin ($13.90), a mesclun salad of toasted goat cheese with herbs, sauteed bacon, and vinaigrette for an appetizer.

When it come to entrees, there is no shortage of variety with galettes and crêpes that encompasses meat, seafood, and vegetable fillings. I ordered their Saint Caradec ($17.90) [****.], a galette filled with scallops flambéed with lambic (a type of beer brewed only in the Pajottenland region of Belgium), and topped with a creamy leek fondue. The unique combination of flavours was nicely contrasted against its buckwheat base, and went perfectly well with the apple cider.

Meat lovers should tuck into Pont-Scorff ($16.90) [****.], a galette paired with delicious ground beef, onions, freshly-made tomato sauce, and mushrooms. One thing to bear in mind while dining at Crêperie des Arts is that you should always leave room for dessert. You will not regret it.

Even the simplest crêpe on the menu, a humble Salted Caramel Butter crêpe ($8.90) [*****], can elicit a pleasurable response. All dessert crêpes are made from wheat flour, whilst the galettes are made from buckwheat flour (no gluten). Therefore, you need not worry too much about excessive calories just yet. Bring your girlfriends here for an evening tête-à-tête and savour famous French dessert offerings like Crêpes Suzette, or simply unwind after a long day’s work with your loved ones.

Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie – Paragon

In decadent desserts on September 29, 2007 at 11:51 pm

Canelé Pâtisserie is fast-becoming Bakerzin’s biggest rival with a new outlet in Paragon in addition to their main one at Roberston Walk! This June, the guys behind Canelé have also opened a new dessert restaurant named Macaron located next to Canelé at Robertson Walk. So who’s the man behind Canelé’s continued success? He’s Executive Pastry Chef Pang Kok Keong

Not many people know this, but I’m a huge fan of Canelé’s breads. Those who know me even better will know that I’m a picky bread-eater. So that must say something about their breads right?

I’d recommend that you try their Croque Madame ($11.50) [****]. It’s a home-made white toast bread with ham & Swiss gruyere cheese, sunny side up and salad with house dressig on the side. Great sandwich.

On our right we’ve got the Club Honey Baked Ham ($12) [***.], another white toast bread sandwich with yummy honey baked ham, omelette, mayonnaise, juicy tomato, chips & greens with house dressing on the side! These aren’t exactly bite-sized and they sure pack quite a mouthful into it. Loved the chips. They make great nibbles for in-between chatting and waiting for friends.

Now if there’s 1 thing you absolutely have to try at Canelé, it’s gotta be their crepes. ANY CREPE. This one over here is their Savoury Crepe
with smoked salmon
($13.50) [****], with red onion, capers and dill cream cheese. Generous portions of smoked salmon, and the cream cheese didn’t overpower the overall taste of the crepe. I’d say this one’s awesome for smoked salmon lovers out there.

If you’re looking for something a little lighter or grabbing a quick bite for lunch, get the Chicken Stew ($11.50) [****] with leek, carrot, button mushroom, onion, perfumed with Provencal herbs. Served with Bread Basket. This “little” stew is deceptively simple in appearance, but it’ll satisfy your hunger pangs real quick.

Last but not least…Canelé’s specialty: Dessert!

Meet my personal favourite: The Strawberry Tart. [****.] I believe this image over here can speak for itself. Don’t forget to try their humble Nutella Pie [****], you won’t regret it. There’s way too many good desserts at this place, so feel free to take your pick at the display counter. I’m not keen on their chocolates though, as I felt that the chocolate couvertures were not great. For chocolates I’d still prefer Prestat Fine Chocolates or Laurent Bernard’s chocolates at The Chocolate Factory.

My Secret Garden

In decadent desserts, the big date on May 13, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Are you someone who craves for an intimate dining experience in a quiet, idyllic environment? If the answer is a resounding YES! then this place is perfect for you. Contrary to what the owners of My Secret Garden may think, their lil secret nook isn’t that much of a secret anymore now that they’ve been featured on the locally telly. However I’m certain that discerning foodies who’ve long discovered this hidden location have counted themselves as 1 of their regular clientele. To your left, we have the alfresco dining area. For the benefit of those who require a smoking area, I’m afraid there isn’t one. Their indoor seating capacity is able to accomodate approx. 60 pax, but I wouldn’t count on it if I were you. Make a reservation!

The Seafood Aglio Olio ($20) [****.] came with generous portions of succulent scallops, mussels, prawns, squid & clams. Each strand of pasta was coated with just the right amount of olive oil. Personally this is something that I look out for whenever I taste an aglio olio pasta. Some restaurants tend to drench the pasta in olive oil, treating it like a sauce. A good aglio olio should be lightly coated with it and done al dente with a hint of garlic & parsley.

If you are a fan of white meats, do give the Pan-seared Cilantro Chicken ($18) [****.] a shot. It is a refreshing change from your typical chicken chop with a tangy-sweet mango dressing, topped with bell peppers and zucchini. Select from a choice of chicken thigh or chicken breast, accompanied by mashed potatoes. I must add that the mashed potatoes make a very yummy side! Very healthy main course we have here. If you’re someone who loves their staple main course such as the Ribeye Steak ($25) [****], theirs will not disappoint. The delicious sauce that tops your steak is a house blend made with red wine & a savoury brown sauce, grilled to perfection. I would recommend that you order the house red wine ($12/gls), a malbec that’s selected specially to complement your steak.

Now let’s introduce dessert! In my opinion, the desserts on the menu outshine most of the items on the menu. The Blueberry Cheese Cake ($7) [*****] is an absolute must-try! It is by far THE BEST blueberry cheese cake I’ve tried, ever. The biscotti crust is thick, and the cheese is light and fluffy. You will not taste any whipped cream, and their homemade blueberry dressing is made with the freshest blueberries. This lovely dessert you see on your right is Berry in Love ($8) [*****] - only available during dinner. It is fresh strawberries with mascarpone cheese, mint, sugar icing mixed with a raspberry vinaigrette. ++Mascarpone is a triple-creme cheese, made from a generally low-fat (25%) content fresh cream. It’s made from the milk of cows that have been fed special grasses filled with fresh herbs and flowers. A dessert that’s simply divine, it will tease your tastebuds and make you want more…

Need I say more? Visit this joint anytime you need a place to celebrate a special occasion!

Bangkok sweets

In decadent desserts on January 7, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Here’s a triple treat for those who have a penchant for sweet things. If you’re planning to visit Bangkok sometime in the near future, you should check out these places located near the various shopping districts around Bangkok. I’ve got a pastry shop, ice-cream parlour and iced drinks shop coming up. stay tuned & scroll down!

iberry was an interesting lil ice-cream parlour I chanced upon while I was holidaying in Bangkok in December. This iberry outlet is sandwiched between Burger King & Häagen-Dazs (on left) in the Erawan area. You will find a building named Amarin, a large Mac’s and Hyatt Hotel nearby. If it helps, you could tell the cabby it’s in the vicinity of the 4-faced Buddha..but since there’s a chance that he won’t understand you, I strongly suggest you take note of these landmark buildings.

They’ve got unique homemade flavours such as gooseberry sorbet, rose apple sorbet, hazelnut, macadamia, ovaltine & horlicks..to name a few. Single scoops are priced at 60 baht (cone) & Double scoops are 70 baht (cup). They had Christmas sundaes at the time (dine-in), but I settled for their vanilla & rose apple sorbet to go instead because I was in a rush. The rose apple sorbet was very light & refreshing without being overly sour. You would taste more of the ‘apple’ really, with only a slight tinge of rose. I chose vanilla to complement it to have an idea of how their ‘basic’ flavours compared with those back home. Verdict: 7/10

/check out other locations on their website!

Next on the list we have Deliya by Farmhouse, which is run by President Bakery Public Company Limited (a Thailand-based company dealing with bakery products). They’ve got an outlet in megamall MBK, as well as behind Siam Square (on right). Siam Square is another shopping centre connected by a linkway to MBK..the place kind of reminds me of Bugis Junction. Anyways, this place has FANTABULOUS strawberry jam biscuits and cakes worth trying. Don’t buy the chicken sticks in those cute lil green containers they’ve got though, it didn’t exactly pass my taste test haha.

Next door to Deliya, you’ll find Ice King..a shop selling fruity iced drinks like mango freezes, juices, iced coffee & teas amongst much more. I’d like to think of it as a Thai bubble tea place because it’s somewhat similar in concept. They use real fruits in their concoctions, so the drinks make a good refreshing treat after a long shopping marathon. I decided to pay Ice King a visit because I noticed the constant long queue at the shop while I was shopping nearby…overcome by severe dehydration.

I hope you guys enjoyed this entry on Bangkok, I’ve got another 1 on a restaurant in Baiyoke Sky Hotel coming up in the near future. =)

The French Stall

In decadent desserts, randoms on January 2, 2007 at 6:13 pm

That night, I had an early Christmas dinner at The French Stall with my family. It’s located off Serangoon Road after Little India, diagonally opposite the Indian Temple, along North Sturdee Rd. If you look to your right while travelling along the main road, you can’t miss it. I’ve long heard about how their french food is good & affordable, so I was pretty psyched about going there. But before that, my parents had to rub salt to wound about the fact that they visited the place before me. ha.

Anyways a friendly waitress gave us her utmost attention all night. For starters she recommended that we try their French Onion Soup ($3.80) [****]sweet stuff and their escargot.

Escargot with garlic & butter ($8) [****] It was served in portions of a half dozen. The musky-grainy taste of improperly-cleaned escargot was thankfully absent. After passing my initial taste test, I proceeded to dip each morsel into their killer garlic-butter-olive oil-parsley combination…and it was gooood. I’d say Be adventurous! give this a try. YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE. Banish the thought that snails are disgusting cos these aint garden snails, they’re totally safe for consumption.

Introducing…the Mains.

Roast Duck Leg with orange sauce & risotto ($15.80) [****] Ooh..where do I begin? Let’s just say I couldn’t quit nibbling off my mum’s plate (this was hers). The duck was crisp & well-roasted, and the tangy orange sauce lent a sweet taste tht complemented the savoury duck well. Risotto was a good choice because it balanced the salty taste of the duck. (Risotto is the European version of our ‘mui fan‘)

Veal Shank ‘Marengo’ style with french beans & carrots ($14.80) [****.] This was my pick for mains. I had a preconceived notion that it’ll look like grilled veal with a french sauce. But it turned out to be a Drool-worthy stew with tender chunks of veal. In fact, ‘Marengo‘ refers to a veal/chicken dish in which the meat is sautéed in olive oil, then braised with tomatoes, onions, olives, garlic, white wine or brandy and seasonings. Sometimes scrambled eggs accompany the dish. It’s said to have been created by Napoleon’s chef after the 1800 Battle of Marengo. Don’t underestimate this seemingly small portion of veal, it’s very filling!

Beef Fondue for 2 ($15.80/pax) [***.] What you see here is called Fondue bourguignonne, whereby cubes of raw beef are cooked in a pot of hot oil, then dipped into various savory sauces. The oil in the pot is olive oil. Perfectly healthy. We were given lil skewers to cook the marinated beef, potatoes, onions & carrots. The entire set is accompanied by 3 sauces that tasted remotely like Thousand Island, French sauce & something I couldn’t place. There’ll be a gas canister under the table and the oil is preheated so that cooking can be done without the fire later on. This dish does sound expensive, but who’s stopping 3 or more people from sharing? hee. It’ll be lots of fun I promise.

Grilled Lamb Chop with eggplant & tomato ($15.80) [****] Great grilled lamb. ‘Nuff said. All you carnivores out there, look no further…order this!

Others not mentioned include their Tagliatelle with ceps & black trompettes sauce ($10.80), suitable for those who desperately need to curb the tummy’s call for carbs. It’s a cream-based pasta just so you know..I wouldn’t want someone who is lactose intolerant to be trying this..

Guanaja Chocolate Souffle ($5.80): AWESOME Dessert in 3 words. A close competitor would be the Profiteroles. They’ve also got other desserts like Tiramisu and a dessert tht tastes like crème brûlée.

Icekimo

In decadent desserts, places to chill on December 20, 2006 at 12:46 am

I discovered Icekimo in September 2005.
But I was in the vicinity today and I simply couldn’t resist revisiting the place again for the 3rd time. After a long walk in the rain outside, I was warmly greeted by their comfy white sofas, lil pink tables and Christmas decor. It’s a quiet lil ice-cream parlour that makes their own ice-cream & reinvents desserts..I would say. They’ve got interesting local flavours like chempedek, milo dino and durian amongst many others.

Instead of ordering my favourite flavour – Belgian Chocolate, I decided to share with my brother their latest offering: Spaghetti Ice-cream! ($5.90) [****]
What you are staring at right now is REAL spaghetti. It consists of generous toppings of white chocolate, strawberry sauce & chocolate rice. The “meatballs” are actually ferrero rocher chocolates and the “spaghetti” is their vanilla ice-cream shredded to resemble it. Mmmmmm..don’t worry, you won’t be tasting a tomato-based sauce! I’d highly recommend this one.

Now let’s meet a popular favourite..their ice-cream in a waffle basket. 2 scoops of any 2 ice-cream flavours in a waffle basket is priced at $5.50..my mum ordered their new flavour Jolly Christmas [***]- which tasted rather suspiciously like paddle pop I must say..and Tiramisu [**.]. I found that their Tiramisu flavour lacked the oomph of cocoa powder & coffee.

A brownie with 1 scoop of ice-cream ($4.20) My sister ordered 1 with their Blueberry Cheesecake ice-cream [***.]. The brownie tasted like the average brownies sold in most cafes, but the blueberry cheesecake flavour was rather refreshing. If you’re a fan of brownies with ice-cream, go ahead & give this one a shot.

On the other hand, if you’re a coffee-lover…or one who loves ordering things like mocha frapps..you should try their Mocha Affagato ($4.30). I ordered this for my dad and he finished it in a matter of minutes. For the record, my dad isn’t into desserts, so that must say something huh? Sadly, he didn’t give me a chance to sample it so I can’t comment much! haha.

//Their take-home tubs of ice-cream are priced at $7.90
