The Return of Fast Food.

Feast with caution this year as Singapore welcomes popular American restaurant chains like Chili’s, TGI Friday’s and Wendy’s back to our sunny shores. They were once available and developed quite a following in the 80s and 90s, but had to cease operations due to poor business caused by the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and franchising issues. However, they are now under new franchise holders and we can expect more sinful fastfood to come…who knows? perhaps A&W will return someday. Aside from these American establishments, Nando’s, a popular Portuguese grilled-chicken chain from South Africa is also reopening in May at Bugis Junction (they were here briefly at Marina Square in 1997). Here are their locations:

wendy's
Wendy’s : Lau Pa Sat Festival Market (opened Dec 2009) + Jurong Point (1st qtr of 2010)

peri peri,chicken,nando's
Nando’s : Bugis Junction (May 2010) > another one’s opening at Tanglin Mall later this year

ribs,chili's
Chili’s : Tanglin Mall (opened Jun 2009)

TGI Friday’s : The Heeren (opened late Dec 2009)

Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen: Singapore Flyer, Changi Airport T3, Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre (Toa Payoh Central next to Courts)

Looks like Mac’s, KFC, Burger King, Long John’s Silver, Yoshinoya, and Mos Burger has some competition…all the better for most of us I’d say with our increased fast food options. I do urge you to dine with moderation though – pace yourselves & add a salad or two – because these are still unhealthy foods. That being said, have fun exploring your new options!
